In a climate where game developers are terrified to take chances it seems almost too good to be true that something as ruddy as “Blood Dragon” could exist.
Freestanding madness
Intermediaries in big game consoles are created to stop projects like this, or at least deprive them of any distinctive character. But here’s the “Blood Dragon”, anyway – in all its purple-colored eighties.
This is strictly not an expansion pack, so you do not even have to own “Far Cry 3” to download “Blood Dragon”.
This is a very own thing. Apart from some little easter eggs, the story is missing from Jason Brody’s guerrilla war against the pirates on the Rook Islands. So no, there is no robot Vaas that shoots out of the ears of purple laser rays, no matter how cool it may be.
“Blood Dragon” runs its own retrofuturistic race, inspired by corny action rolls from the eighties and early nineties. The type that should preferably be seen on grainy VHS cassettes.
Thick, little chrome
Neon colored dinosaurs that shoot laser beams from the eyes ! If in itself it is not enough to spoil your interest, you can pack your packet now and save the money. All hope is out.
“Blood Dragon” is a single big metaphor at the expense of cheap b movies, shooting games and the eighties in general. It’s also an excellent gaming experience, which sprays the core from “Far Cry 3” with a thick layer of chrome and sarcastic humor.
You must not have grown up with dirty video jams and Sega Genesis to appreciate the retro style here, though it certainly helps in the fun.
It keeps you realizing that “Blood Dragon” does not take itself seriously for a single second, and it’s meant that everything should be really harry.
Neon Stew
At first glance, it is easy to draw parallels straight to the “Terminator” series, especially since the old action hero Michael Biehn has voted the main character.
If you know your Arnold, you will find your references, even though the people behind “Blood Dragon” seem to be much more inspired by cheap b things like “Atomic Cyborg”, “Nemesis” and “Eliminators.”
So yes, a game version of something like this:
“Blood Dragon” is evident in grell eighties, with sporadic references to old Sega Genesis classics such as “Cyborg Justice”, “ESWAT”, the game “Operation Wolf” and “Zero Wing”. Complete with 8-bit style movie clips and bloodharry replication. Fortunately, no weary fun about “All Your Base is Belong to Us”.

We are far into the high-tech future: in 2007. This is the world after the second Vietnam war, where the apocalypse has got its own apocalypse.
In the radioactive ash of North America, a new type of soldier is created: Mark IV cyber commander Sergeant Rex «Power» Colt.
Half machine, half human – over one hundred percent brain-dead rabbit. The last, harsh hope of humankind.
His former chief Sloan has had enough of the authorities to try to rebuild the community, and literally broke the globe back to the Stone Age.
Sloan has been drinking blood and getting mad. Well, crazy. Attached to several nuclear weapon missiles equipped with a virus that will transform the world’s population into primitive cavemen. Or something like that. Like the examples, the story is consciously very idiotic.
Like the brother
The point is that Rex Colt has to clean up, so he is sent to Sloan’s headquarters on an island of approximately the same size as “South Island” in “Far Cry 3”.
Here, the neon hero must clash with Sloan’s army of synthetic cyborg soldiers in Omega Force, with some assistance from the blonde researcher Dr. Elizabeth Darling (voted by Norwegian-based Gray DeLisle).

You are awarded “Cyber Points” to kill enemies, complete goals and steal valuables. The experience points are exchanged in new skills over a total of 30 levels. Tricks are automatically upgraded so you can not choose their abilities like in “Far Cry 3”.
Instead of a photo camera, you now have a “cyber eye” that keeps track of enemies, and you no longer throw pebbles to distract them – throwing a nerd D20 dice.
The weapon selection has only cosmetic differences: so you’re still equipped with sniper rifle, shotgun, automatic gun, grenades, and bow-and-arrow. Let go that they often have more feet and laser beams now.
